The Beautiful ,Rare and Striking Broadwood Barless Grand. A bitter sweet tale of what was then a revolutionary new design, its production, yet its high price, which meant that relatively few were made and sold. The whole tale is told in detail in a book by Alastair Laurence ; "The Broadwood Barless Piano". The whole idea was to avoid the very real imbalance of tone, that to this day dogs many pianos where a bridge is obliged to be, partially or totally divided by the frame support sections . You need frames to have these supports, because the pressure exerted by the strings of a grand can be 25-30 tons. Yet the price paid is a tail off in tone on either side of the metal frame struts. |

The idea of a totally barless frame came at a time of new development in high-grade Swedish Cast Steel at a Norwich foundry around 1895. As Mr Elwell will tell you, these barless frames are something else to lift out of a piano. They needed to be thicker and sturdier. Some people believe that these instruments represent the pinnacle of Broadwood's output. They are remarkable pianos, which were fetching from 125 guineas to 350 guineas at a time when the average yearly income was probably 50 to 100 pounds. |

This means ofcourse, that if there were only a few ever made, there are certainly very few around today. This ensures that an owner can expect their price to rise in the coming years, especially as the secret of their design becomes more widely appreciated. This grand is currently in the later stages of restoration by Art Music.Some of the cabinet work has been redesigned to give a more balanced style to the external appearance....a more modern 'less is more approach', with modest elegance.
